The Plot Thickens......

I received a call last week from my former boss. He "wanted to plant a seed" in my head. Due to extenuating circumstances the position I was all but promised, and had been begging for (well not begging exactly) will be (allegedly) opening for application in 2 months. The pay and benefits are better than I am making now, and the shifts will be better. Here is the twist...I have been STRONGLY ENCOURGED to apply for a police officer position with my current employer. There is an opening right now, and a number of them on the way. The pay for an officer is $9k/yr more than I currently make AND is about $4k more than I would make at this new offer, WITHOUT overtime (mandatory and lots of it). I could (theoretically) make $12-15k/yr more than either job with OT. Now for the flip side, the officer position will require the following things:
1) 5 weeks in Little Rock, Arkansas for a police academy
2) rotating shifts -- 3 or 4 months working each of the following:
0600-1400 (actually 0545-1415)
1400-2200 (1345-2215)
2200-0600 (2145-0615)
3) may not get a weekend off for a year or more
and 4) no more paid holidays off....granted holidays worked are at 2X pay.

So you see, dear readers, that just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in. (Wait that sounds familiar, let me try again)
So you see dear readers, I now have all my old problems coning back to me.
Mo' money, Mo' problems, I guess!!! Stay tuned for further details.

New Job

As luck would have it I have been at my new job for the last 3 weeks (as of Friday). I have learned that working for the government as a civilian is ENTIRELY different. I am one of 3 new employees who, with 2 existing employees, will be the foundation of a Police dispatch center for the organization. This will be the first 24/7 police dispatch center for this organization. Currently, police dispatchers are only used for 2/3 of the day, Monday thru Friday. We will be starting 24/7 operations after all the equipment and whatnot is moved. This will be a great chance to influence and affect the operations of this organization, but I will be working against decades of things being done differently. Conversely, I have promotion potential on the police side as an officer, as they are interviewing for 2 sergeant positions and will probably have 3-4 patrol offier positions opening soon.

On the family scene, my son is now officially 6 feet 4.5 inches, desperately trying for 6' 5". He will make it before he turns 14 in July I am sure. Otherwise we are all happy and mostly healthy.
